Do you really know how to forward emails?
50% of us do; 50% do NOT. Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it? Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their e-mail addresses. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his (her) computer can send that virus to every e-mail address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel! How do you stop it? Well, there are two easy steps:

1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message. That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first, then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message.
If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.

2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: columns for adding e-mail addresses. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) column for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way that people you send to only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: in this manner, your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients"in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it.

So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses !

Firefox FoxyVoice Extension
Read a web page for you. There is a great FireFox extension at http://foxyvoice.kenche.info called "FoxyVoice" that utilizes Microsoft's Text to Speech engine to read FireFox-browsed web pages to you.

Full Screen Internet Explorer
F11, Internet Explorer will open in full-screen mode.

FastStone Free Image Viewer
From their website:
"FastStone Image Viewer 2.20 is an image browser, viewer, converter and editor with an easy to use interface and a nice array of features that include resizing, renaming, cropping, color adjustments and more. It also includes an intuitive full-screen mode that provides quick access to EXIF information and thumbnail browser via hidden toolbars that emerge when you touch the edge of your screen with the mouse. Other features include a high quality magnifier and built-in slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image frames, scanner support, histogram and much more. Its free and and it has some of the features you find in similar paid programs.

Advanced Batch Converter ABC
www.batchconverter.com. It allows you to convert many picture files at a time. You can batch crop, batch resize, batch convert, and more. It is a commercial program. You can obtain a free trial from ABC's website that is fully functional.

Change the Internet Explorer logo
In Internet Explorer, there is a small logo (usually the Internet Explorer logo). You can change this by going to Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc. Select User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Mgmt -> Custom Logo, and setting the new logos. Note that there is both a "static" and "animated" logo, reflecting when Internet Explorer is static and when it is requesting information.

Control + Click
The control key is usually a very handy Windows keyboard shortcut key. It performs a similar function in almost every situation. Hold down the control key and click (or double-click) something, it will typically open it in a new window. For example, if you hold control while clicking a link in Internet Explorer, it will open a new window pointed to that link. If you hold control and double-click a folder in the Explorer interface, it will open a new window for that folder. If you hold control while dragging a file or folder to a new location, Windows copies, rather than moves, the file.

ClearType
If you have ever noticed how crisp text appears on certain systems as compared to your own and wished that you could have that same sharpness and clarity, you should turn on ClearType. ClearType is a feature built into Windows XP that allows you to further smooth screen fonts. To turn it on, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Appearance -> Effects, and check "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts." Choose "ClearType" (as opposed to "Standard") and press OK. You should immediately notice a subtle difference!

Remote Desktop
Windows XP includes Remote Desktop that allows you to access your computer from another computer (provided the computer is connected via the Internet or by a network). Go to Control Panel -> System -> Remote; check "Allow users to connect remotely..."; press "OK." If you or another user wishes to connect to your computer, all they have to do is go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop, type in your computer's name or IP address, and press "Connect." Of course, if you are behind a router with NAT, a hardware firewall, or other such security measures, you may have to configure these devices to allow Remote Desktop traffic on port 3389. (It is also important to note that Remote Desktop is only an XP feature, and only XP Pro can actually connect to remote desktops. However, both XP Pro and Home allow a desktop to be accessed remotely.)

Open Tab With One Click in Firefox
Sometimes I get amazed at all the little shortcuts out there when one knows them. Here is another one for you Firefox users who also happen to have a mouse with a scroll-wheel. Usually, to open a link in a new tab in Firefox, you just right-click on the link and hit New Tab. As a little shortcut, you can simply click on the link with your scroll-wheel. It will open into a new tab.
Its a quickie little shortcut. It might take a little getting used to because some (including me) have a tendency to roll the wheel slightly when trying to click with it, thus missing the link. The other catch is that it might not work if you already have other functions assigned to scroll-wheel clicks.

Print Website in Landscape Mode
Ever printed a page from a website and found that the right side has been chopped off? Many times you can correct this by using Landscape mode to print the document. First, always do a print preview before printing the page. If you see that part of the page will be cut off, then go to Page Setup and choose Landscape mode. Then view the preview, and if all looks OK, send it to print.

Internet Voice Chat for Free
Voice chat is certainly nothing new on the internet, however I wanted to bring you a tool which I recently became aware of. It is known as Skype (www.skype.com). It is a free internet telephony service. Their software client integrates chat as well, but you can easily strike a chat with anybody in the world - for free. The catch for the freebie is that the person you are chatting to must register on Skype as well. There are service add-ons such that will allow you to use Skype to call any phone number just like a normal phone, as well as voice mail.
I am currently using Skype to chat with developers down in Argentina. The quality is not bad. Just like internet traffic, it has it's days. One day its crystal clear, another day it may be hard to understand them. But, for free, I can't complain. I just hooked up a USB headset to my PC, installed Skype, and I was in business.

Test Your Computers Security
Your computer uses ports to communicate over the internet. These ports are not physical ports, but software ports with arbitrarily assigned numbers to represent them. While the ports are necessary to do anything online, hackers can use them to try to gain access to your PC. Using special software which will scan your IP address for open ports, hackers can find ports which would grant them access. However, if a port is hidden, or stealthed, they cannot see the ports.
A router with a built-in firewall will conceal the ports because it hides your computers ports while showing its own ports to the internet, so it offers a level of protection. You can test your PC for open ports, as well as other security tests, using Gibson Research's free Shields-Up service. Head on over to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and test your PC for free.
