Other Information
Reliability
BusDiary has been used continuously day in day out for more than ten years.
New companies tend to have significant dramas during the first month.
Then another couple of dramas in the next two months.
After this initial stage they generally run unassisted.
Tables have been setup with minimum internal restrictions so to minimise chance of damage and to make repair is easy.
Known Problems
After system or machine crashes:
Unwanted and stray lock files may need deleting using Repair.exe which searches and deletes unnecessary lock files.
Tables may need a rebuild after a system crash.
This can be done in house by some-one of moderate computer literacy.
After an upgrade there is often a minor issue or two to be fixed.
Previous Problems
I think in ten years I have had one table that would not rebuild.
I lost one or two records which were easily reentered.
And one set of invoices was issued twice because data was incorrectly transfered from a home computer to a work computer.
We have met all manner of users and have protected against all manner of madness.
Database Maintenance
Yesco strongly recommends Terminal Services or VNC access through an adsl connection for database maintenance.
On older machines it is useful to archive old bookings to keep the database snappy.
The Author
Andy Chalkley. Trained in Engineering in the Imperial College, University of London.
This included computing modules.
He taught Maths Physics and Computing at various high schools in Western Australia.
Owned and operated 'Down Under Bus and Coach Service Pty Ltd' in Perth Western Australia from 1989 to 1999.
The business was sold in 1999.
Down Under had a busy fleet of charter buses close to Perth centre.
Developed BusDiary in 1993.
Down Under had a contract to supply buses to WestRail in the event of disruption of service.
Up to 75 buses were co-ordinated using BusDiary sometimes reaching 750 movements in a day.
BusDiary scheduled this without problem.
Andy Chalkley now runs a computer company that covers sales, service, website and database.
